city seal     WILDLIFE PROGRAM INFORMATION

Wild animals exist not only within the City of Los Angeles, but also in adjacent areas of the County and neighboring cities. Wildlife encompasses several species of animals including coyotes, foxes, opossums, raccoons, snakes, and predatory birds. As housing further encroaches into the hills, the interaction between wildlife and residents grows more frequent.

The Los Angeles Department of Animal Services has a Wildlife Division to aid residents in rectifying problems and some of the uneasiness that many people may face with wildlife. This program allows for a Department representative to provide on-site evaluations, education on methods of exclusion, deterrents and discouragement of wildlife forays into our city neighborhoods. It is not the intention of the Department of Animal Services to remove wildlife from residential areas. Rather, the ultimate goal of the Department to educate the public and foster a relationship between wildlife and the community, in which the two can live together and coexist in peace. This is a multi-tiered program designed to help neighborhoods better deal with wildlife issues, and further lessen contact with these animals by investigating changes in both human and wildlife behavior.

Purses, Wallets, Briefcases

Loose change

Laptop Computers, Cellular Phones, iPods, CD's Cameras

HELP STOP CRIME THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

1358 N. Wilcox Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90028

YOU CAN PREVENT VEHICLE THEFT!

Auto thieves are everywhere and are looking to take your car! Don't be their next victim.

Amateurs who can be stopped fairly easily take most cars. You can increase your protection against this type of crime by taking the following sensible precautions:

Lock up

  • An unlocked car is an open invitation to a car thief. Lock up when you leave your car, and take the keys with you.
  • Lock the trunk or tailgate.
  • Close all windows - professional thieves have tools that unlock cars through the smallest openings.
  • Be sure vent or wind-wing windows are shut tight.
  • When you park your vehicle remove all valuables from view, such as, cellular phones, iPod's and other valuable possessions. Do not leave gift-wrapped packages or cameras lying on the seat. Lock all valuables in your trunk or take them with you.
  • Lock your car even if you are making a quick stop at the gas station, convenience store or mini-mall.

Park carefully

  • Don't leave an auto in unattended public parking lots for an extended period. A car is five times more likely to be stolen from an unattended lot than from the street or attended lot.
  • If possible, park your car in a lot where you don't have to leave your keys.
  • Never attach a tag with your name and address to your key ring. If the keys are lost or stolen, the tag with lead the thief directly to your car and your home. If you have to leave your keys with a parking attendant, leave only the ignition key.
  • At night, park in well-lit areas with lots of people around.
  • Turn wheels sharply toward the curb when parking, this makes it extra difficult for thieves to tow your car.

Operation I.D.

  • With an electric engraver, etch your driver's license number (preceded by the letters "CA") on cassette players and other valuable items.
  • Record your vehicle identification number (located on a small metal plate on the dashboard of newer cars) and store it in a safe place.
  • Keep the vehicle registration in your wallet or purse, not in your car.

Use anti-theft devices

  • When buying a car, check the manufacturer's list of anti-theft options, such as interior hood and trunk releases, locking steering columns and others.
  • Consider the purchase and installation of security devices, such as:
  • Interior hood lock release.
  • Second ignition switch or "kill switch" to prevent electrical current from reaching the coil distributor.
  • Fuel switch to prevent fuel from reaching the carburetor.
  • Locking gas cap.

Everyone needs to read the newsletters posted on www.lapdonline.org Go to Hollywood Hills and read Basic Car 6A31. (We’ve included this months here, following this notice.)

Night sensor lights are a good investment. Trim around your property so we can see no one is hiding.

With the holidays upon us, we tend to leave packages in our vehicles. This is an open invitation to a Burglary From Motor Vehicle.

Do not leave pets in vehicle unattended.

BE alert to door scammers. They say they work for DWP, Phone, Cable or lost my cat in your yard etc.... whatever the ruse, they get you to accompany him/she to the back yard. During this time, the accomplice(s) slips in the front door and helps themselves to your valuables. they leave, and sometimes you will not notice anything missing for days.

Talk through an intercom or window.

Keep phone close by.

Get a good description.

Hollywood Community Newsletter November 2007
Captain's Message

November will begin the Holiday season and a multitude of people from around the world will be visiting and celebrating.  Various religious affiliations, beliefs and cultural backgrounds will be brought to Hollywood Area, therefore a warm welcome to those who visit.

The Hollywood community is also as diverse as the visiting population and many traditions are celebrated with family and friends.  From this, Hollywood Area's population will increase, therefore awareness and precautionary measures should be taken to avoid the criminal element.

Unfortunately, past years have shown that street robberies and burglary from motor vehicles increase during this time due to the numerous visitors and shoppers that provide prime opportunities for the criminals.  To date, statistics have shown a forty-percent increase in robberies in October from September's statistics and a twelve- percent increase in burglaries from motor vehicles for the same time period.

Minimize the risk of being a victim by taking a few simple precautions.  Be aware of your surroundings and be alert to people acting suspicious or out of the ordinary.  Park your vehicle in a highly visible area, where security is present and place all items out of sight.  Trust your senses but not to be paranoid or fearful.  By following these steps, it makes it difficult for any criminal to follow through with the crime.

Additionally, traffic collisions as a result of driving under the influence (DUI) increase during these months and traffic enforcement will be a priority for our West Traffic Division who patrol Hollywood Area and their focus will be on DUI driver's.  Drive carefully and report suspected DUI driver's to local authority.
Halloween night on Hollywood Boulevard was an annual tradition for thousands of visitors and Hollywood Division along with dozens of officers from neighboring divisions ensured the safety of all celebrating the hallow night.  This month holds the Santa Claus Parade (AKA Christmas Day Parade) along Hollywood Boulevard, which draws tens of thousands of visitors.  The Hollywood residents and businesses welcome these events, which provides a positive impact for the community and visitors.

Please share the information with family and friends and enjoy the coming holiday season.

Burglary

We are still experiencing Burglaries in our basic car.  Daytime seems to be the more active then the nighttime.  Please "POLICE" each other.  A neighborhood that watches over one another is most likely going to have less, if any crime.  Common method: Unlocked doors, unlocked side gates and open windows.

We are having a rise in burglaries by people posing as DWP, LA-Times, Gardeners, etc…
Sanrio:  A knock at the door asking if they can enter the rear of your property, they ask you to accompany them to show you what they are doing or looking for.  Meanwhile an accomplice enters your front door and takes your valuables.  The thief calls his partner via cell phone and tells him job finished.  They leave.  Sometimes you don't notice you have been victimized for days.

Please never open the door and let anyone into your home unless you have an appointment with them.  Notify the authorities if you think there is something wrong.  Try to get a good description of the person(s) from head to toe.  A vehicle description and license plate if possible.  Cameras and Video Surveillance are great tools to help combat these thieves who prey on peoples trusts.

Mail: Take in immediately or have a locked mailbox.
Garage doors open. This is an invitation to your property.
PLEASE LOCK ALL DOORS AND WINDOWS. SET ALARMS!

Burglary from Motor Vehicles:

Do not leave any valuables including gym bags and back packs in plain sight.  Garage door openers and vehicle registrations go hand in hand; you are out for the evening.  The thieve(s) takes your opener and registration with your address and responds to your residence.  Basically The thieve(s) is in your home while you are not...

Please take advantage and sign up for the e-Policing at www.lapdepolicing.org you will be updated with all the current LAPD broadcasts.

Meetings:

The Hollywood Area Community Police Advisory Board (CPAB) meeting "Holiday Get Together" is scheduled for Tuesday, December 4, 2007.  If you have any questions please contact myself or the Community Relations Office for further information.

LOS ANGELES IS S NATION'S FIRST LARGE CITY TO INCLUDE POLYSTYRENE FOAM IN CURBSIDE RECYCLING PROGRAM

LOS ANGELES (July 26, 2007) - Los Angeles residents now can recycle polystyrene foam (popularly known as Styrofoam) among other plastic products in their Blue Recycling Bins, announces City of Los Angeles Public Works Board President Cynthia M. Ruiz. *As of July 1, the City's Blue Bin Recycling Program became the first large city in the nation to include polystyrene foam in its recycling program," adds Ruiz.

Department of Public Works incorporated the product into its recycling programs to provide residents convenience in recycling plastic materials and for other environmental considerations, according to Bureau of Sanitation Director Rita Robinson. *We now recycle
polystyrene foam to curb our dependency on urban landfills and decrease tonnage going to landfills as well as to help reduce green house gas," says Robinson.

Polystyrene foam, has become a reliable, reusable resource where in the past little or no recycling market existed, notes the Bureau Director. *Less energy is needed to recycle than to manufacture the product,* says Robinson. *Also, current economic factors have contributed to its viability as a recyclable commodity.*

Clean polystyrene foam joins several items that can be placed in curbside blue recycling containers, says Bureau of Sanitation Executive Officer Enrique Zaldivar. *These items include all clean dry paper

May 8, 2007 but just forwarded to MOPOA email 6/14/07 by concerned neighbors.

Dear Neighbors:

I am writing to alert you to a Jury Duty scam that was reported to me by the Sheriff's Department.

The scam is essentially an effort to steal your identity, and it has been verified by the FBI. Please pass this on. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call.

Most of us take summons for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of scam has surfaced.

A caller will contact you and claim to be a Jury Coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Once you give out any of this information your identity has been stolen.

The scam has been reported so far in at least 11 states. This scam is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they're with the court system.

The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

IMPORTANT WARNING REGARDING MAILBOX THEFTS.

TO:Mount Olympus

FROM:  Concerned Neighbor

I just wanted to share a troubling personal
experience regarding stolen mail from my home mail
box, located on McKim Court.
This past Saturday evening, June 9, 2007, I left
my home around 7pm to take my dog for a walk.  I
noticed my mail had been delivered, as my mail box was
stuffed full, including several prescription
deliveries.  I forgot to get the mail when I was on my
way back up the driveway a short while later.
Sunday morning I remembered the mail delivery,
and went out to retrieve the mail.  I then discovered
all of my personal mail, including the prescription
packages, was missing.  However, there was junk mail
from about 5 other mailing addresses from the area
stuffed in my mailbox in its place.
I have reported this to the Post Office and I
still have the junk mail from around the neighborhood
in my possession.  I think everyone should be aware
that there is mail theft going on in our neighborhood,
and in more than one place, as I had multiple
location's mail placed in my mailbox.

Sincerely,

Concerned Neighbor

These are recent reports of new burglaries in the hills.   They are in Hollywood Knolls, and

nearby La Castana---both close-in neighborhoods that don't have 24/7 patrols the way we do.

We still should be cautious, however.

June 5, 2007, North Knoll at the top of Benda:

Look out for a red headed white male in his early 30's.  He has a light mustache, 5'8", approx 200lbs..  After speaking to the neighbors,

I believe he drives a dark green Ford Escort.   He broke into my house last Wednesday and apparently, he has been spotted in lurking in the

neighborhood the week before too.   A neighbor down the street claimed to have had his home almost broken into as well.  There is evidence that,

his doors have been
